Tip of the day: How to track down a roof leak

October 15, 2026

Water travels along beams and ceiling boards, so the stain is often far from the actual hole.

How to do it

  1. Go into the roof space on a dry day with a torch and look for water stains, dark wood or mould above the wet spot.
  2. Follow the stains uphill to where they start.
  3. From outside, check that spot for cracked or slipped tiles, rusted sheeting, loose screws and failed flashing around chimneys and vents.
  4. If you still cannot find it, have someone run a hose on the roof section by section while you watch from inside.

Pro tip: Most leaks start at flashings and roof screws, not in the middle of a sheet or tile.

Safety first: Never walk on a wet roof, and always have someone hold the ladder.
