Tip of the day: Redo the silicone around your bath or shower

Black, peeling silicone lets water behind your tiles. Replacing it is a neat weekend job.

How to do it

1. Cut out the old silicone with a sharp blade and scrape off what is left.
2. Clean the joint with spirits and let it dry completely.
3. Put masking tape on both sides of the joint for a straight line.
4. Run an even bead of bathroom silicone, smooth it with a wet finger, then pull the tape off straight away.

Pro tip: Fill the bath with water before sealing. The weight opens the gap, so the seal does not tear when the bath is used.
