Tip of the day: Stop a toilet that keeps running

A constantly running toilet is one of the biggest hidden water wasters, and usually an easy fix.

How to do it

1. Lift the cistern lid and check if water is spilling into the overflow pipe. If so, lower the float so it shuts off sooner.
2. If water is not reaching the overflow, the flapper or washer at the bottom is leaking and needs replacing.
3. Check that the flush chain or lever is not catching and holding the valve open.

Pro tip: Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern. If colour shows in the bowl after 15 minutes without flushing, the seal is leaking.
